Encrypt Member Passwords: Install New Updates

The Install New Updates module on the admin dashboard lists one-time platform installers that have pending steps for your specific website. Click the green Check For Updates button to refresh the list — an installer only appears when your site actually has something left to install, and it disappears from the list once its steps are complete.

What Encrypt Member Passwords Does

Encrypt Member Passwords is one of the most important installers a site can have pending. Running it does two things:

  • Upgrades any member passwords still stored in an older format to the platform's current secure hash format.
  • Installs the password-reset infrastructure the member Forgot Password flow depends on.

Why It Matters

On websites where this installer has not been run, the member-side Forgot Password flow can fail silently: the password-reset email appears in the site's outbox as sent, but it never actually delivers to the member. Running this installer restores normal password-reset email delivery.

How to Run It

  1. From the admin dashboard, find the Install New Updates module and click Check For Updates.
  2. If your site has pending steps, Encrypt Member Passwords appears in the list. Click Install.
  3. After it completes, click Check For Updates again — the entry disappears once all steps are done.

If Encrypt Member Passwords does not appear in the list, your website is already up to date — the module only shows installers with pending steps, so there is nothing to do.

After Running

Existing members keep their passwords and stay logged in — the upgrade changes how passwords are stored, not the passwords themselves. To confirm everything works, use the Forgot Password link on your site's login page with a test member account and verify the reset email arrives.
